Toen we op vakantie waren in Oostende, gingen we onder andere ook langs de tentoonstelling ‘The Art of The Brick’ van Nathan Sawaya. Alle kunstwerken op deze tentoonstelling zijn gemaakt uit LEGO-blokjes. Er stonden verschillende soorten kunstwerken: portretten, kopieën van bekende standbeelden, gezichten, enzovoort.
When we were on holiday in Oostende, we also went to see the exhibition ‘The Art of The Brick’ by Nathan Sawaya. All of the artworks on the exhibitin are entirely made from LEGO bricks. There were different kinds of artworks: portraits, copies from famous statues, faces, and so on.
Nathan Sawaya (de man achter deze kunstwerken) is van beroep eigenlijk advocaat, maar in 2004 besloot hij zijn baan op te geven om kunstenaar te worden. Hij ging niet gewoon schilderen of boetseren, maar ging aan de slag met LEGO-blokjes. Je denkt misschien dat je mogelijkheden beperkt zijn als je met LEGO een mens wil namaken, maar wat Sawaya doet met wat eigenlijk bedoeld is als speelgoed, is fantastisch!
Nathan Sawaya (the guy behind these pieces of art) is actually a lawyer, but in 2004 he decided to leave his job and start working as an artist. He didn’t want to go paint or sculpt, so he started working with LEGO bricks. You might think that you’re limited when you want to recreate a human with LEGO bricks, but what Sawaya does with what is actually meant as toys is amazing!
Nathan Sawaya maakt, zoals ik eerder al zei, verschillende soorten kunstwerken. Hij heeft eigen creaties met telkens een mooi verhaal of idee erachter, maar vaak maakt hij ook kunstwerken na. Zo zie je hierboven een replica van de David van Michelangelo. Deze replica is niet zo groot als de originele versie (het was onmogelijk om na te maken door het gewicht), maar de verhoudingen kloppen wel. Het is ook helemaal in 3D gemaakt en ziet er langs achter dus even impressionant uit als langs voor.
Nathan Sawaya makes, as I’ve said before, different kinds of artworks. He has own creations with beautiful stories and ideas behind them, but often he also recreates pieces of art. On the picture above you can see a replica of David by Michelangelo. This replica isn’t as big as the original one (it was impossible to make because of the weight), but the proportions are correct. It was also made entirely in 3D, so the back looks just as impressing as the front.
LEGO-blokjes hebben scherpe hoeken, maar bij deze kunstwerken lijkt het of er wel degelijk rondingen in zitten. Van dichtbij zie je alle blokjes zitten, maar wanneer je wat afstand neemt lijkt alles nóg realistischer. Dit hand is trouwens gigantisch groot (kijk maar hoeveel blokjes het bevat).
LEGO bricks have sharp edges, but with these artworks it almost looks like there are curves in there. Up close you can see all of the little bricks, but when you take a few steps back everything looks even more realistic. By the way, this hand is gigantic (look at the amount of bricks in there).
Nog zo’n prachtig werk: een portret van kunstenaar Andy Warhol. Nathan Sawaya wordt vaak vergeleken met deze kunstenaar omdat zijn werk soms ook wat neigt naar pop-art en wat weg heeft van Warhol’s werk.
Another one of those beautiful works: a portrait of artist Andy Warhol. When people talk about Nathan Sawaya they often also talk about Andy Warhol because his works sometimes look a bit like pop-art and so they look a little like Warhol’s work.
Er werden nog veel meer prachtige werken tentoongesteld in Oostende, maar ik wou jullie nog niet alles laten zien zodat ze zelf nog een bezoek kan brengen aan de tentoonstelling. Ze loopt namelijk nog tot 7 september 2014 in het Kursaal Oostende. Het is absoluut de moeite om te zien, zelfs als je geen grote fan bent van LEGO. Er is enorm veel te zien en nadien kan je je helemaal uitleven in een ruimte waar je zelf je mooiste LEGO-kunstwerk kan bouwen!

There were many more works in Oostende, but I didn’t want to show you everything yet. That way you can visit the exhibition yourself and see the rest of it. It’s open until September 7th 2014 in Kursaal Oostende. It’s definitely worht watching, even if you’re not a huge fan of LEGO. There are really a lot of things to see and afterwards you can let yourself go in a room where you can recreate your best LEGO-artwork!
