In dit artikel beloofde ik jullie dat er een review zou volgen van Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore zo gauw ik hem uit had gelezen. Bij deze volgt mijn mening over dit boek met wel een heel geheimzinnige titel.
In this article I already promised you that there was going to be a review of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore as soon as I had finished it. Here is my opinion on the book with a really mysterious sounding title.
Toen ik de titel van dit boek las, waren de eerste vragen die in mij opkwamen: ‘Wie is Mr. Penumbra?’ en ‘Hoe bedoel je, een 24-hour bookstore?’ Dit zijn waarschijnlijk heel voor de hand liggende vragen om bij een boek te hebben, en ze maakten me heel nieuwsgierig naar het verhaal erachter. De achterflap van het boek was al even mysterieus en dit was ook de tekst die me overhaalde om het boek mee naar huis te nemen:
When I read the title of this book, the first questions that immediately popped into my head were: ‘Who is Mr. Penumbra?’ and ‘What do you mean, a 24-hour bookstore?’ These are probably very common questions to have with a book as this one, and they made me very curious to read what the story behind them was. The back of the book was just as mysterious and this was the thing that made me decide to take this book home:
“Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a Web-design drone and serendipity coupled with sheer curiosity has landed him a new job working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. And it doesn’t take long for Clay to realize that the quiet, dusty book emporium is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few fanatically committed customers, but they never seem to actually buy anything, instead they simply borrow impossibly obscure volumes perched on dangerously high shelves, all according to some elaborate arrangement with the eccentric proprietor. The store must be a front for something larger, Clay concludes, and soon he has plugged in his laptop, roped in his friends (and a cute girl who works for Google) and embarked on a high-tech analysis of the customers’ behaviour. What they discover is an ancient secret that can only be solved by modern means, and a global-conspiracy guarded by Mr. Penumbra himself… who has mysteriously disappeared.”
In deze korte samenvatting worden veel van de gebeurtenissen in het boek opgesomd, maar ze worden pas in het verhaal zelf helemaal uitgelegd. Bij sommige dingen duurt het zelfs tot bijna op het einde van het boek vooraleer je eindelijk te weten komt wat er gebeurt in de boekenwinkel en wat de klanten lezen.
In this short summary a lot of the things that happen in the book are named, but they’re not explained until further in the book. For some of them, they aren’t explained until near the very end of the story when you finally know what happens inside the bookstore and what the clients are reading.
Ik was in de eerste plaats fan van het boek door de leuke schrijfstijl. Soms waren de woorden die gebruikt werden moeilijk of ingewikkeld om te begrijpen (er worden veel woorden uit de technologie-wereld gebruikt), maar over het algemeen was de schrijfstijl heel aangenaam om te lezen.
Wat me ook aantrok in dit boek was de combinatie van twee uitersten: boeken en technologie. In het verhaal wordt geprobeerd om een eeuwenoud mysterie te ontrafelen met behulp van de nieuwste technologieën van Google waardoor je een leuke mix van twee totaal verschillende dingen krijgt.
In the first place I liked the book because of the nice writing style. Sometimes the words that were used were difficult to understand (because of the use of a lot of words from the technology-world), but in general the writing style was really enjoyable to read.
What also attracted me to this book was the combination of two extremes: books and technology. In the story they try to unravel a mystery that’s several centuries old with the help of Google’s newest technologies which gives you an interesting mix of two entirely different things.
Op Goodreads (een site waar je boeken kan beoordelen) gaf ik Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore geen vijf sterren, maar vier. Dit deed ik omdat, hoe goed ik het verhaal ook vond, de ontknoping me toch niet helemaal aansprak. Na zo’n mooi boek had ik een einde verwacht dat minstens even goed was, maar om de een of andere manier was het anders dan ik had gehoopt.
Dit neemt echter niet weg dat ik het verhaal ontzettend goed geschreven en origineel vond en dat ik het boek zeker en vast aan iedereen aanraad!
De cover vind ik ook heel leuk en opvallend, en de cover van de hardback versie is nóg cooler omdat hij licht geeft in het donker (Wie wil dat nu niet in zijn boekenkast?)!
On Goodreads (a website where you can review books) I gave Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore not five stars, but four. I did this because, no matter how good I thought the story was, the ending didn’t really appeal to me. After such a nice book I expected the ending to be at least just as good, but for some reason it was different from what I had hoped it would be.
This doesn’t mean I still think the story was written very well and that it was very original. I’d recommend the book to anyone!
I also think the cover is really fun and eye-catching, and the cover of the hardback version is even cooler: it lights up in the dark (Who doesn’t want that on his bookshelf?)!
Ik herhaal het nog eens: als je graag een mysterieus verhaal leest dat ook nog eens een mix is tussen technologie en geschiedenis, dan ga je dit boek zeker leuk vinden!
I’ll repeat it again: if you enjoy reading a mystreious story that is also a mixture between technologie and history, you’ll definitely like this book!
